GORE-TEX®: the world leader in waterproof-breathable membranes equips FIVE® gloves
To keep your hands dry when riding in wet weather, we equip our mid-season, winter and heated gloves with a breathable waterproof membrane. The world standard for breathable waterproof membranes is GORE-TEX®. It was therefore natural for FIVE, as a glove specialist, to enter into a partnership with GORE-TEX®, a specialist in breathable waterproof membranes, to supply us with the membranes that equip our top-of-the-range waterproof glove models.
To put it simply, a breathable waterproof membrane is like a plasticized micro-perforated envelope in the (enlarged) shape of a hand, whose pores (micro-perforations) are large enough to allow the evaporation of water vapor formed by perspiration (it's said to be breathable), and narrow enough to prevent raindrops from penetrating (it's said to be waterproof).
The GORE-TEX® membrane is placed between the glove's outer structure (made of water-repellent fabric, leather or a combination of the two) and the insulating wadding (in the case of thermal insulation) or inner lining (in the case of non-insulation), to prevent the latter from soaking up water or condensation. So your hands can stay dry in the rain. Provided, of course, that raindrops don't get inside the glove by running down the inside of the cuff (which you should make sure they don't by placing the glove and jacket in the right position when you get fitted).
The waterproof membrane also acts as a windbreaker, which is enough to make this type of glove more comfortable than a standard glove in cool weather, in the morning or evening, for example.
The right to incorporate a GORE-TEX® membrane into our products has to be earned, and requires a license from the world leader. After a lengthy validation process, GORE-TEX® only grants this license to brands and production units it selects on the basis of extremely rigorous criteria, guaranteeing that the end product featuring a GORE-TEX® membrane will provide complete satisfaction for the consumer, in terms of waterproofness and breathability. The famous "Guarantee to keep you dry" claimed and assumed by GORE-TEX®.
Adopting a GORE-TEX® membrane is just one step. Each model of glove fitted with this membrane, as well as its components, undergoes laboratory testing in order to obtain GORE-TEX® validation of its overall waterproofing and breathability qualities, over and above the characteristics of the membrane alone. Similarly, the factories in which gloves with this membrane are assembled are tested before they are awarded the GORE-TEX® label.
We therefore pay particular attention to the various components of the glove, to ensure that the materials used in the construction of the outer shell do not detract from the exceptional properties of the membrane.
This implies a permanent exchange between FIVE's design and development teams and GORE-TEX®'s technical teams, both in the design and manufacturing processes for FIVE x GORE-TEX® models.
Beyond the label and the guarantee provided by the GORE-TEX® name, there are several types of membrane and their assembly within the glove structure.
This membrane can be assembled in a number of different ways. It can be partly bonded or fully bonded to the fingers and palm. This affects the feel of the handlebars.
Top-of-the-range, fully bonded membranes (GORE-TEX® Grip Fully Bonded) may appear a little stiffer at first, but offer a better grip on handlebars and controls. They are therefore to be preferred.
As you can see, having a GORE-TEX® membrane in your gloves is a guarantee of quality and comfort when riding in the rain. Above all, it's the best guarantee of staying dry, comfortable and long-lasting.
